Community Plantation

Community plantation infographic

Overview

ANCF's flagship programme. Since 2013 we have organised community-led plantation of native and endangered tree species across schools, colleges, universities, religious institutions, government offices, hill-tract villages, and public spaces in Bangladesh. Where possible, planting is paired with seedling distribution so households can plant on their own land.

Approach

Site types we plant in

  • Primary and secondary schools, and college and university campuses
  • Mosque, temple, and Eidgah grounds
  • Government offices and court compounds (e.g., District Court, Rajbari)
  • Hill-tract villages in Bandarban and Rangamati
  • Railway stations and other public infrastructure
  • Botanical garden and Forest Department nurseries (for nursery support)

How a typical project runs

  1. A local coordinator identifies a site and host institution.
  2. Native species are selected based on local conditions and what is missing from the existing canopy.
  3. Seedlings are sourced from partner nurseries or grown at temporary nurseries (e.g., Jagannath Hall, Dhaka University, 2014).
  4. Planting is organised as a community event — usually with students, faculty, and volunteers.
  5. Surviving trees are revisited and (in newer projects) tagged and geolocated for monitoring.
